My novel, Dalliance, is based on an actual divorce trial that occurred in 1860. It had the kind of newspaper coverage of its day that Ivana and Donald Trump would have today. Of course, there is the usual—sex, drugs, rock and roll, or as referred to then—dalliance, morphine powder or chloroform, and galops, minuets and the polka. Everything swirls and curls within the pleats of history—women’s rights, Seneca Falls in 1848, abolition and states rights, often at odds, and writing, of course, newspapers, novels, short stories too, by the likes of Poe, Boz (Charles Dickens), and Hawthorne. Mid-19th Century high society was frequently anything but genteel, thankfully for us writers. But, somehow, in the ordinariness of existence, the patterns of dailiness, the substance and import of their lives teach us, as Diane Johnson says, “That the lessons for the present haven’t changed.” Is that a comfort? I’m not so sure.
